[Oh thank God she didn't pick up right away, not because she didn't pick up right away, but because it's kind of a relief to be able to kind of go over what needs to be said and
it's also worrying, you know, that Steph didn't pick up right away.] Hi- [Oh look, the phone does work.] Hey, it's me, Tim. [If there's a told-you-so, he doesn't want to hear it.]
I'm trying to piece together a timeline of known events. ['And wondering if you could help me with the homework' doesn't really sound great.] Call me back. It's been a while. [Sure, he can avoid the living hell out of anyone and everyone back in Gotham, but here? Well- wow, there's a lot to talk about. Click. Hanging up and definitely not pacing.]
[Because of reasons, on August 13th there will be really simple message on Steph's phone:]
if anyone asks it's history class and you sit four rows ahead of me
[Was there a real need for it? Who knows. But just in case. Also there'll be no reply if she texts back because there's this whole detective thing going on. Maybe.]
[The first message is audio. It's Tim's phone, and it isn't like he doesn't feel bad about not giving Steph his contact number for Red Robin, the official one, but there's just... there just hasn't been the need.]
I think those things only come out at night. [What do you mean he's paraphrasing the network.] So I'll meet you on the clinic roof before rush hour begins.
[After Tiffany sees this (though of course from her perspective, it looks like Steph just gives Babs an incredulous look and then cuts the feed completely), she shoots Steph a text.]
do you want to drink beer and not think about complicated stuff
[ Steph picked the library not because it was neutral ground - though that did factor in - but because of the quiet and relative privacy. With their voices down and the shelves around them Steph wouldn't worry about people overhearing their conversation, like she did when she talked to Rikki and Omar. Everybody saw how badly that went.
She waits at the end of a row of shelves, visible to the door. The Cat is on duty, which is good. He doesn't talk to anyone or question anyone that she's noticed. He'll mind his own business. ]
[The problem with talking among the stacks was, while you may be hidden, so might somebody else a few feet away on the other side, so privacy wasn't necessarily guaranteed. There were reading rooms, but those might be too private; semi-public would be better for staying civil. Boyd walks in and spots her straight off, but instead of going up to her, he sits down at the end of one of the long unoccupied tables, folds his hands and looks at her expectantly.]
[Tiffany knows Steph is okay physically - she hadn't shown up injured in the infirmary, and she's seen her at a distance in the halls since then - but emotionally, she knows she's struggled. So she gets a message.]
[He should be great at this now. How many times has he had to sit through the will of a parental figure? He's practically an expert. He could start a consultation firm on how to get through these things. Also, he kind of can't breathe.
Theoretically, he's been trying to maintain some kind of boundaries with Steph here, because that's something you're supposed to do with an ex. But she's also the person here who knows him best, so when he feels the need to have a panic attack at someone over text, he chooses her.]
[ It's just an address. If she's ever been to Bruce's townhouse, she'll recognize the address. Cass isn't quite up to words right now. So hopefully, Steph will figure this out. ]
[ Steph has never been there. Or, for that matter, talked to this version of Bruce. She doesn't understand. She does go to the address and scope the place out. ]
[The delivered package is a long, mostly flat box, expertly wrapped in glossy white paper with blue ribbons tied around it. The box itself is wood instead of cardboard, with hinges along one side. Inside is a pump-action bandage gun (imagine basically a nerf shotgun, only it fires bandages instead of foam shells. Point at the wounded person, pull trigger, and instant bandage) and a copy of The Alliance of Lordaeron, both wrapped in white tissue paper. On top of the paper is an envelope, sealed with actual wax, and stamped with a stylized lion head. The letter inside is on heavy stationery embossed with the same design at the bottom of the page. The letter is handwritten in black ink and clearly written with a fountain pen with a real nib instead of a ballpoint. It reads:
Dear Stephanie,
I know we don't know each other that well, so I hope this doesn't seem too strange. I remembered that you said you liked history and I thought you might find the bandage gun useful.
Happy Winter Veil gift-giving holiday of your choice.
