93,30 - Senior year, revisited

[ Stephanie Gordon has been applying to schools for the last several months. At the age of 18 her high school days are almost over and it would seem she has a bright future ahead of her in journalism or some such thing. She's starting to get interviews, but she's not too happy with her prospects at the moment. In fact, she's already considering widening the net and trying places even further away from home. Why, you ask? ]

I swear, if I hear one more person tell me I would be happier in an all girls school I'm gonna break somebody's nose. Yes, I might be, but it's the principle of the thing, you know? It's not like I didn't apply to any.

[ She just got back from a college interview. She's pretty sure she didn't get in, but she may as well make a point while she's all dolled up. ]

Speaking of which, has anyone heard anything about the Times scholarship? I was supposed to hear from them some time this week, but I guess the letter could have gotten lost in the mail.

[ She huffs, glances away from the screen and tucks a stray hair into place out of her eyes. ]

Anyway, how is everybody? Ready for the weekend?

[Sternly!] No, Stephanie.

[And a smirk.] Only if they really deserve it.

[There's a light knock on her window and half a face peeking through her window. Knocks a little louder.]

Psst, Stephanie! It's me!

Kon!

[ She rushes over and opens the window. ]

Did anyone see you?

Spam.

[Shakes his head and climbs into her room, doing his best to not make any noise.]

No, I was super careful. There's a couple of new agents in town. [Kon is attempting to be inconspicuous by wearing a Greaser style leather jacket, white shirt, and jeans. A bark comes from his pocket, which prompts Kon to go "shh!"

Seconds later, a puppy's face pops out from his jacket. The pup looks exactly like Patches, except he has green fur and black spots instead of most of his fur being white, and a small set of antennas are attached to the top of his head.]

More than ready. I can't believe how frustrating your college search is being. I guess I won't be going at all. [A shrug.] It's okay though. Maybe I can go to Europe.

It's just the way the world is right now, you know what I mean? Nobody wants to change, but we're demanding it. [ And by 'we' she of course means her generation of protestors and hippies. Not that she's done a lot of personal protesting. She wants to get into college first. ]

Have you found work anywhere?

You keep right on demanding. I'll cheer from the background. [Because front lines is not where she can be at the moment.]

I haven't found anything yet. I was wondering if that guy with the car shop wouldn't mind taking an apprentice. He teaches people at the high school sometimes, but I don't see anyone asking if he needs help at his garage. I can't face ringing up groceries at the A&P. I just can't.

[Aya did not have many close friends at the local high school. Stephanie was a rare exception; the girl was a natural extrovert, and it had been impossible to ignore her friendly demeanor for long. Still, she greeted the request for information with a shy smile, her voice soft and quiet as always.]

I believe there was a slight delay in paperwork, but the recipients should be receiving news within the next couple of days.

Oh, great. Like I wasn't nervous enough already! [ She must have had five different people look over her essay. She sighs, then straightens. ]

Well, I'm not going to let it ruin my weekend.

That's what I said! So what if the odds are against me? I'm smart enough. I should be able to go to whatever school I want.

There needs to be a party, somewhere. I'll work on it.

Guess you're pretty serious about this whole school thing, huh?

[She guesses her dad probably wants her to go - but somehow, Faith doesn't feel like she'd be welcome in any place where learning was a priority, no matter what Bruce thought.]

[ Steph may not be the most studious person, but once she sets her mind on a thing she doesn't give it up. ]

Never really saw much point in it... [Except maybe pleasing her mother.]

Maybe they're just running late.

I hope they're not running too late. That scholarship could mark about half of my hopefuls off the list.

Well, I certainly hope you wouldn't be forced to take matters that far, Stephanie. [But your history teacher doesn't sound particularly disappointed or chiding, because seriously fuck those guys.]
