Vulcans do not have a sense of humor. However, that was not the reason. The perambulations along the beach was the deciding factor.

I've never actually been to a beach that was clean enough to walk on without shoes. That part was the joke. The lame jokes part was serious.

Your assessment of beaches is correct, however the one time I visited the beaches here, I found them remarkably clean. Provided one does not mind the feeling of sand on bare feet.
