06 - Just give me something to fight for

[ Steph is in the gym. From the look of her she's already gotten a bit of a workout, but she's raring to go for more. ]

I'm in the market for some sparring partners. I want to start training again. I'm pretty out of practice. I mean, three months ago I was training with Batman, so take that as you will, but I'm out of practice.

I don't have any of my own weapons, obviously, but if anybody wants to practice with weapons I'm sure I can get some from the supply closet. I'm talking serious training here, not just playing around.

So... if anybody wants to spar right now, you can see I'm in the gym. So bring it!

[ This message is quieter, more serious. ]

I don't want to talk to therapists anymore. I don't like it, and I don't think it's helping me.

[ He wants to, Steph. He really does. He's just terrified of screwing up. ]

John's in real trouble, here. I can't just sit around doing nothing.

Do you think he's not aware of how things can work? That he's not a warden who has chosen his risks?

Or is it something else.

I think he's caught up in a game he can't get out of. A game like Black Mask tried to play with me.

And do you think his fellow wardens will leave him to suffer?

Or do think think Scorpius isn't here for the same reasons you are? To learn new ways and gain his own attempts at redemption?

Monsters like him don't deserve redemption!

Are you sure of that? That he is an utterly iredeemable thing?

[ It's almost a growl. ]

[ This is not a request. ]

Because if you're going to pour out aggression at anyone, it'll be me.

I'm not-- I'm trying to help a friend, you really think now is the time for a sparring match?

Would you like me to play back how you just sounded? How rage-run?

[ She is utterly taken aback, and knowing how right he is only makes her angrier. ]

My feelings aren't what's important here.

Yes, they. Intent matters. Intent separate justice from revenge, righteous rage from selfish anger. Your feelings are all that matter.

[ He never once lifts his voice. ]

[ Batman would have had a hard time with level of control. ]

[ If she were less in control of her mouth she would be sputtering furiously. ]

You're just avoiding the problem.

No. I'm getting to the root of it. You're very, very angry. At yourself, more than anything.

I know that better than anyone else on this ship.

So, CTS. Let's go work it out. Then we can talk about the root issues.

[ For a moment she's silent. Then she realizes that she's literally shaking with rage. Beating the crap out of something sounds like an awesome idea. ]

Fine.

[ She cuts off the feed, heading straight for the CTS. ]

[ Bruce meets her there, a moment later, unlocking the door. ]

Have you been in the CTS before?

No, never.

[ She's glaring at him openly, but her attention turns to the door. She's curious to see what it looks like inside. ]

It's a training facility. It matches the abilities of those who enter. We could get seek and destroy, survival missions, search and rescue while under hostile fire.

[ He dropped the bag he'd brought up, before he picked and item out of it. A collapsible bo. ]

Take your weapon, and let's go.

[ Well that's unexpected. She can't think of anything to say, so she doesn't try. She picks up the staff and follows him into the CTS.

All of her anger, fear and frustration of the past months is poured out into their holographic enemies. She tries to focus on her technique, but before long she loses herself in it. Her moves become more and more reckless, and the enemies go easier and easier on her, but she doesn't stop or even slow down until she stumbles straight into the wall and can't seem to direct herself away from it.

Once she stops moving her body waits only a minute before making its feelings about the exercise known all over the floor. ]

[ Bruce weaves in and out of enemies, avoiding as opposed to striking, if he can. His work with the maestros of Brazil have served him well. He ducks, bobs, and sluices through space with a control over his body that some of the bats might envy. ]

[ But once the simulation ends, he's headed for Stephanie as she purges her rage in a much more literal manner. ]

Don't worry, this place cleans up after itself.

[ She wipes her mouth on her sleeve, breathing heavily. She can't quite get off the wall yet. ]
