04 - Video - Boredom kills

So I'm inmate-less for another two weeks. I don't suppose anybody has some good reading suggestions? Something exciting. Are there any good King Arthur stories written in plain, legible english? I don't know about you all, but being 'right wroth' just sounds silly to me.

Have you tried The Once and Future King?

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I haven't. It's probably just my bad luck that I ended up with Le Morte d'Arthur.
paradoxlol: (&Ariadne: working)

[personal profile] paradoxlol 2010-09-15 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a lot more accessible than Le Morte d'Arthur. Disney based Sword in the Stone off of it.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I remember seeing that movie... Weren't there talking squirrels?
paradoxlol: (BLAHBLAHBLAH)

[personal profile] paradoxlol 2010-09-15 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I'm pretty sure the squirrels weren't in the book.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Good. I remember that part being distinctly weird, even for a ten year old.
paradoxlol: (ARTHUR SMILES)

[personal profile] paradoxlol 2010-09-15 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I always liked that part.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I was always a bigger fan of the heroic bits.
paradoxlol: (brainstorming)

[personal profile] paradoxlol 2010-09-16 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
The magic was my favorite as a kid. I don't really remember the rest, to be honest.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Me neither, but I remember what I was like as a kid. If there were heroic bits, they were my favorite.

[identity profile] hottemper.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely the Admiral wouldn't be so unkind as to saddle you with the burden of rehabilitating an inmate?

[Please excuse Seth's antiquated views on the duties of women. He's more fair than most people in his camp, though!]

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it is what I'm here for.

[identity profile] hottemper.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm to understand you also cut a deal with the Admiral, for the purpose of guarding an inmate? Why would you do such a thing, if I could be so forward?

[identity profile] hottemper.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. Forgive my hardness; it's borne from years of service that rarely yields the manner of result intended to dissuade a mob.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And what are you here for, if not to help people?

[identity profile] hottemper.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm here for the same purpose. But I find myself linked with one of the very men I left camp in order to free myself from.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Bad luck. If it makes you feel any better, I've had some awkward reunions of my own.

[identity profile] hottemper.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This one wasn't awkward so much as it was utterly contentious and without good will at all. I hold less to my fortunes as far as luck bodes good or ill, and more towards thinkin' that I've been somehow lured into Purgatory.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt that. Although there are an awful lot of downsides here.

[identity profile] hottemper.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
My new ward bein' fucking one of them. [Beat] Pardon my language, miss.

[identity profile] hottemper.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Eyebrow raise]

I suppose that I'll leave you to your endeavors, bein' that I have neither knowledge nor resources to quell your current restless state.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Sigh. ]

Thanks anyway.

[grin] "Right wroth?" Sounds like a pretty questionable medical condition to me. How about Mists of Avalon? It's King Arthur, but from the point of view of the women around him. It's pretty good, and very easy to read.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it might mean they're angry? I dunno.

I haven't heard of it. Is it exciting?
goodgrasshopper: Cosplay Model Silverrr (I am so totally on to you.)

[personal profile] goodgrasshopper 2010-09-15 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it does, yeah.

I thought it was pretty exciting. Action, sex, pagan rituals, intrigue... It's probably my favorite King Arthur story.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll definitely have to check it out then. Who wrote it?
goodgrasshopper: Cosplay Model Silverrr (Look at this thingy!)

[personal profile] goodgrasshopper 2010-09-15 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Marion Zimmer Bradley. There's a whole series of them, but they stand alone. You don't have to read any of the others, and I think Mists of Avalon came first anyway.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

Today on 'Talking About My Own Characters'...

[identity profile] gotgreenmagic.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You should've been around when Merlin was here, I bet he had a bunch.

I assume you mean from the show, but SHE'S STILL MINDBLOWN

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You're kidding me.

I do indeed, he was so sad when everyone was like 'where is your beard D:'

[identity profile] gotgreenmagic.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Not so much. He left....I dunno, a while ago. We didn't really talk and he was kind of young but I'm still pretty sure he was the real deal.

awwww.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's... kind of epic.
everylittlegirl: (uh yeah)

[personal profile] everylittlegirl 2010-09-15 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Merlin and Arthur were both here for awhile, younger versions. Arthur was a jerk, but Merlin was really cool. For that reason, I recommend books on Merlin instead of Arthur.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you know any books about Merlin?
everylittlegirl: (let me explain something (ellen page))

[personal profile] everylittlegirl 2010-09-15 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
There's this short series one of my friends told me about, called The Lost Years of Merlin. I don't know if they're any good, though.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll take a look and see.

[identity profile] love-dont-roam.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Y'know I haven't given the library a good look since coming here.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I've basically been living there. You know, when I'm not banned due to spontaneous musical numbers.
grayatonement: (lemme fix that misconception)

I have a wide selection of books if you ever want to borrow anything. I know the library has it all, but.. sometimes the selection can be overwhelming and difficult to peruse.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I may do that. It looks like I've got a fair number of suggestions already, but anything you want to add to the list? Since you have a precedent for the kind of story I find exciting.
grayatonement: (innocent talk)

Hugos' original "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is a good read. Otherwise, Camus' "The Stranger".. or "No Country For Old Men" by McCarthy, if you prefer something more modern.
