04 - What a terrible thought

[ Private to Bruce ]

[ If she gave a single damn about her pride right now she would have pressed for audio. Tears run down Steph's panic-stricken face, the starry void in the background. She's on deck. ]

Bruce, I need help. Kevin's hurt, I think he's dying, and I've got a twisted wrist. We need to get him to the infirmary ASAP.

[ Private to Jesse ]

[ She switches over the feed before waiting for an answer. She doesn't want to take any chances or lose any time. ]

Kevin's hurt bad. I'm taking him to the infirmary but... I think he's dying. If he does, you have to bring him back.

[ Private to Bruce ]

[ After a moment's thought, she realizes that them sitting next to Davy Jones' unconscious body is a wee bit incriminating. ]

It was Cthulu, he started it. I... I don't think he's dead. But he started it.

I'm on my way. Can you tell me Kevin's condition?

He's having a lot of trouble breathing. No broken ribs in front, but I think there must be one in the back. He can move okay, but he's coughing up blood. Punctured lung, maybe. He got thrown a couple times, possibly concussion. Fish face grabbed his leg but I don't think he got a good enough grip to break it.

[ Aaaand the howling dog begins. ]

Shush, Slayer.

Keep him breathing. You know CPR, if you have to -- but don't do chest compression.

What floor are you on?

We're on the deck. Just hurry, okay? I think he passed out.

I'm coming now.

[ And he'll be on deck in a few minutes. ]

[ She turns off the phone and lets it fall. At her side Davy and the taser lie abandoned on the ground. Kevin's hand is limp in hers, but he stills breathes lightly. And when he stops, Steph starts breathing for him. There's blood in her mouth when Bruce arrives, and it makes her want to vomit. ]

He what? [His reaction is instant, horrified. He snatches up the communicator and stares hard into it until he spots Davy, flushing an angry red.] That tentacle porn son of a-- I'll meet you there. The infirmary.

We'll be there. Bruce is on his way.

[ And Kevin is getting worse. And the dog is... being a nuisance. ]

[He signs off to make a couple of quick calls, but a moment later he's back on the line, staring at something offscreen, looking puzzled and distracted.]

Hey-- uh, how's he doing?

[ SUCH A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME, AND YET. She has blood on her face from giving him CPR. ]

No heartbeat. He's... there's no heartbeat.

[He blanches, goes a little pale, but there's still confusion on his face as he looks from the screen to whatever else has his attention and back again.]

Okay. Okay-- never mind, I'm coming to you. I-- where are you?

On deck, but Bruce is here. We're moving.

[ With the panic gone from her voice it takes on a dull quality. Any minute now she'll come back around to anger, she's sure. ]

Shit. I mean-- good. All right. I'll be at the infirmary.

See you there.

[ Bruce is gently when he reaches out to move her aside. ]

I'm here. I'm helping. [ Time to get Kevin carefully on the fold out stretcher, and then rolled Davy o to the other. ]

You wheel Kevin and I'll get Davy. You have the dog on a leash? Take him to my office and leave him with Tony.

[ She finally lets his hand go and turns to look for the end of the dog's leash. Slater doesn't make it easy, pacing as he is and whimpering at his human. Finally she gets a hold of the loop and pulls it over her wrist. ]

He still breathing?

He is. I won't let him die, Steph. [ No need to death toll him. ] Here. You're going to hold this over his face, and squeeze to keep him breathing.

[ He'll be bat the back of the two gurneys, pushing to get them to the elevator and get them down to the right deck. ]

[ She takes it and turns away so he can't see her angry grimace. She wishes she had killed him. The stupid beast was too strong for her. At least the taser hurt him.

She sets up the apparatus and firmly but gently starts pumping it with her uninjured right hand. ]

[ He rushes the lot of them to the infirmary, getting Davy dumped in a bed once Kevin is settled. He's most focused on stabilizing the boy and works with his serene, preternatural calm. ]

[ He'll get him stable, and with morphine to get him out of pain. ]

[ Steph holds the dog out of the way, but she doubts Bruce will have much success. She hadn't been able to find a pulse after she starting the CPR.

She watches, working her way from guilt and grief around to anger again.

For good measure she gives Davy another sharp elbow to the hopefully broken ribs. ]

[ Bruce does his best, but when the boy bottoms out, there's just making him comfortable for when he rouses from the death. ]

[ He then goes to get Davy restrained for when he comes around, and gets him on a morphine drip for the pain. Once all that's done, it's time to usher Stephanie into his office. ]

Did you message Jesse? Or Bush? If you haven't, I'll get on that. Let Slayer play with Tony for now, they'll be alright, and take some time to reorient, okay?

Jesse's on his way.

[ She turns to get the dog, then winces at the pain in her wrist. ]

I think I might need an x-ray. [ Or at the very least an ace bandage. ]

Alright. Let's get a look at you.

[ He'll shut Tony and Slayer up in his office while he's doing that, too. And get everything set up. ]

You did really good with this.

[ Since she didn't kill anybody. ]

[ She looks up at him with a look that was meant to be dubious but turned out more despairing. She offers up her sprained wrist. ]

My boyfriend is dead.

He's only pulse disabled at the moment. Jesse will bring him back.

[ The X-Ray is done with fancy, space-tech scanner. A sprain, not a break, good. But he gets her some painkillers and water. ]

I didn't know you were seeing Kevin.

[ And, frankly, he doesn't like the boy at all, but he's not about to stop her. ]

[ She takes the pills and keeps the rest of the water to sip at. ]

Since Chicago.

You don't need to tell me if you don't want to. You're allowed to have a private life. As much as you can, here, anyway.

I - have my own. Such as it is.

[ God knows Christmas brought him a bunch of stuff that filled his office, meaning everybody on the damn boat knows where he sleeps most of the time. ]

It's not a secret. I don't really care who knows what I'm doing or who I'm doing it with.

[ She shrugs, still somber. She's tired now that the adrenaline has worn off. ]

I'm not gonna post a memo either.

That's fine.

[ He's just not going to pry. It's the least he can do. So is getting her wrist in a brace. ]

[ She doesn't even twitch while he wraps her up, though she does reach down with her good hand to rub Slayer's ears. ]

Thanks. I'll just... I'm gonna stay in your office until he wakes up, okay?

Alright. I'll be here in the infirmary.

'Kay.

[ She starts to lead Slayer into the office, then pauses. ]

Thanks. For not freaking out. [ She was honestly kind of expecting it. ]

I make it a point to -- not freak out.

[ He gives her a little smile, and turns back to his work. ]
