54 - Video - Story Time

[ The camera is pointed at the wall at the moment, but not for long. A card is placed against the wall in front of the screen. Narration begins. ]

This
is my father. Sadly, biological. You may have met him in a recent flood.

In life, he drank, got into fights, and robbed banks as the Cluemaster.

Sort of like the Riddler, only dumber.

Batman and Robin beat him up and took him to prison. He escaped. Rinse and repeat.

Now he's dead.

If you see him again, don't listen to him, because aside from being really bad at robbing banks and staying out of prison, he is a colossal jerk.

That's all. Thank you.

[ Added later, Private to Bruce ]

Do you want to stalk the blond boy, or should I? Because if you ask me, he's just begging to be stalked.

[Hoffman has avoided Steph. She deserved it as far as he's concerned. But the little cartoon pictures are just too much to pass up.]

That explains, so very much.

[ It's been long enough that the only appropriate response for Steph is a cutting remark. ]

The curly blonde hair? Yeah, my mom's a brunette.

The drawings really helped.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
They certainly made me feel better.

[and isn't that peachy keen.]

I was going to say something about your ridiculous propensity for dressing up in costumes. It's genetic and not some kind of weird sexual compulsion.

[identity profile] love-dont-roam.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry your Dad was a colossal jerk.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
At least I never wore a bright orange jump suit.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry if you had to put up with him for the flood.

Re: Private;

[identity profile] expectremorse.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Instead you dressed up in a costume trying to embrace a new identity as opposed to accepting who you really are.

Don't need an orange jumpsuit to follow in your parent's footsteps.

[And given that Hoffman's father murdered his mother-this is apparently very accurate.]

[identity profile] future-games.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[You've honestly amused Isaac, Steph. He just didn't have the pleasure of meeting your father.]

The drawings really add to your story, I must admit.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It'll be good for IDing the perp in the future.

Private;

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried that. Instead I decided to just be who I am. The 'identity'? It's just a part of who I am. I don't need multiple personalities to help people.

I'll always hate my father for what he did and who he was, but that's not why I do what I do now. And it's definitely not why I wear a costume to do it.

[identity profile] love-dont-roam.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't know, actually. But Mum can handle herself.

Private;

[identity profile] expectremorse.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Beating up helpless people is a part of who you are? And they say I have problems.

[he folds his hands] Not why you do what you do now? You wear a costume just like batman. [emphasis on batman] the man who beat up your father.

I sense a little bit of an issue there. Unless you really wanted to make a life-goal out of roaming the streets beating the crap out of people.

[pot calling the kettle black right there.]

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, good. She probably wouldn't have put up with him. Of course, I don't know who all talked to him, since he went in my journal and deleted half the conversations, but what can you do?

Private;

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She actually laughs at that. ] You know, I have no reason to even try to explain what being a hero is all about to you, but I can tell you this. The people I beat up are not helpless, and Batman? Is not the only one who beat up my father. Why do you think I put on a costume in the first place? I led them right to him. You should have seen his face when he realized it was me.

That was when I made my choice. The choice that killing wasn't worth it. Beating the crap out of him, now that's worth it.

Private;

[identity profile] expectremorse.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)

It's a pity you and I couldn't stay friends. I happen to enjoy a little brutality too.

[His tone is completely nasty, expression very dark. He hisses out the words before trying to smirk at her. It dissolves quickly into a sneer.]

[identity profile] givemeafight.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are obnoxiously cute drawings.

Private;

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[ And now her voice turns dark. ]

What you do isn't brutality. What you do is torture.

[identity profile] ichoosefight.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I think? This took longer than expected because the art room is really confusing.

Private;

[identity profile] expectremorse.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[he just laughs]

The first rule of any law enforcement agency is to de-esculate the situation. There are charts that are shipped out to every cop, agent, and government employee that talk-in express detail-about just how you are supposed to subdue suspects.

That's it. Subdue. You break a bone? You get written up. You leave a bruise? You get written up. You beat the crap out of someone you get written up.

You maybe trying to enforce the law but you're still breaking the rules. If you're batman...

[He looks angry] There's a reason why people would want to arrest him and people like him.

If you had any sense you'd take a person down in one fluid motion.

I've seen...vigilantes in movies and comic books. Leaving criminals tied to telephone poles is amoral. Half of them will plead brutality and get out on the street if you haven't left them completely incapacitated. How many petty criminals have you "put down" in the name of justice?

I may torture, but at least I kill my fucking...victims. [he looks away] You leave them bruised and broken instead of doing exactly what you claim to worship. Upholding the law. They have rights, I have rights. Are they guilty?

Of course they are.

Do they need to be taken out? Of course they do

But hitting somebody with a stick [Dick, we're looking at you] until they fall to the ground is at the highest level of the police brutality chart. Threat of Great bodily harm and injury. The last thing that any decent and upstanding citizen is supposed to do to another human being.

I don't care how corrupt you think the system is. There are two sides. If you try to be gray you just piss people the fuck off.

I'm a vigilante. I don't uphold the law. I protect people. It's different. And give me one good reason why I should give a crap what the world's biggest hypocrite has to say about the matter?
